What licence do I want?

August 14, 2017

HGV Licences are split into Seperate categories dependant on what weight you aim to carry or tow.

The official DVLA terms for some of these categories are Cat ‘C’ and Cat ‘C+E’ – these may also be known by their older terms, Class 1 and Class 2.

There is also Category C1 sometimes confused with Class 1. However C1 is your typical Ambulance or long wheel based van also known as 7.5tonne. The smallest Category amongst the HGV categories.

Your choice of licence depends on two things: what type of work you want (local, national or even international) and what your earning power could be.

Different categories can lead you into different fields of work C1 is typically multidrop work for delivery firms or Emergency services drivers

categories.

Category C can also be multidrop work that includes larger deliveries to for example your local schools and cafes for food and supplies. Longer distance driving can be found for Cat C but isn't as common.

Category C+E is more commonly your longer distance driving and single load swap overs but Category C+E can also take your further afield to opportunities that may arise in countries like Canada, that can also pay exceptionally well.

Hopefully this helps you steer into the right direction when choosing what Category you might learn to drive.
